it also leads to self-judgment and low self-esteem, she adds, because we’re always comparing ourselves to influencers and the people that we follow on social media. and instead of feeling inspired, we end up in a downward spiral of self-criticism.
“it’s really stems from the feeling of not being good enough,” says jeffs. “when we feel like that, it’s very hard to show up in our lives because we have that inner talk saying, ‘but you’re not as good as that. you don’t look like that. you’re not doing that. you’re not making as much money as that person.’ and it can really flip you into self-sabotage.”
the pendulum has swung from perfection to rebellion
self-sabotage happens when you do things that deliberately undermine your goals. for example, jeffs says that she once spent about a week bingeing on the show “the office,” and not doing much else because she was afraid of growing her therapy practice and not being successful.
but goblin mode has made the pendulum has swing the other way, from perfection to rebellion, she says.
after all, there is something to be said for being self-indulgent and carefree. jeffs recalls a time that she had fried-chicken takeout at 3 a.m. with her 17-year-old daughter while they talked. though she says that some people might say, “oh fried chicken is so unhealthy and eating at night is bad for digestion,” she doesn’t do it often and has great memories of the heart-to-heart conversations.
