i have been a toronto sun columnist since 1995, the majority of that time as music critic with an avid interest in film (including tiff every year) and tv and more recently adding news to my portfolio recalling my vancouver journalism beginnings in radio and print.

my love of music started early growing up in a house with an irish father who loved to sing and dance - big band, frank sinatra, etc. - and before i knew it i was staging elementary school musicals (jesus christ superstar, godspell, hair) at the tender age of 11-12 with my equally creative friends. i was always an avid reader which led to my love of writing that began in earnest in high school and extended to my first year at ubc where i studied second-year creative writing and my instructor told me i would regret leaving the course to become a journalist via bcit’s broadcast journalism program. almost 40 years later, i’m still wondering about what he said.

why i love journalism

i love (most) creative people and i love writing and when i can combine those two things with my love of music, tv, or film, all the better.
