i have four decades of experience in newspaper and magazine journalism, dating back to my first job, monitoring the police radios on the midnight shift at the toronto sun.
i’ve won four national magazine awards and while i’m better known for sports writing, i’ve been nominated in categories ranging from politics to entertainment, science and personal journalism.
i was a sports columnist at the globe and mail and the ottawa citizen, before landing at espn the magazine and espn.com in 2003.
i’ve written ten non-fiction books about sports, including not one but two best-selling biographies of sidney crosby. i’ve also written four novels, the first being adapted for the tv series private eyes, starring jason priestley. i wrote and read an audiobook memoir for audible titled how to succeed in sportswriting (without really trying). another memoir, a portrait of the artist as a young hockey scribe, will be published in the fall of 2026.
my favourite story appeared on the op-ed page of the new york times: “the tao of gravity.” this was an essay i wrote about serving as a crash-test dummy at karate demonstrations and getting body-slammed by wrestling legend stu hart, who was 74 at the time.
born and raised in toronto, i moved to kingston in 2020 before a wrecking ball could hit me while making room for a new condo building. a selection of my newspaper and magazine can be found on my website: joyceville-the-gare-joyce-portfolio.com. a collection of essays spinning out of my audible memoir can be found on my substack: garejoyce2022.substack.com
