don’t put those umbrellas and rain boots away — more rain is coming for metro vancouver.
environment canada said “significant” rainfall of up to 40 to 70 millimetres depending on elevation is headed to the region monday night as a strong frontal system sweeps in.
the storm system is expected to bring light to moderate rain to vancouver, burnaby, new westminster, the north shore and northeast metro including coquitlam and maple ridge starting near midnight, then heavier downpours by tuesday morning until the afternoon.
“totals are uncertain at this time but rainfall amounts near the north shore mountains will likely range from 50 to 70 mm while central regions of vancouver can expect 30 to 40 mm,” said the weather agency, which issued a yellow rainfall warning on monday, the lowest of three colour-coded warning levels.
areas of higher elevation including burnaby mountain and above the upper levels highway on the north shore could see some of that rain turn into snow, but amounts are hard to predict because of fluctuating freezing levels, it said.
the weather system will also bring “significant” snow fall to the north shore mountains, with forecasts of heavy snow for local ski hills.

grouse mountain could get five to 10 centimetres of snow overnight monday and 15 to 20 cm on tuesday morning, said the weather network, while mt. seymour resort is expecting 13 cm monday night and 19 cm more tuesday morning before the snow tapers off to snow showers in the afternoon.
those headed to local ski hills should plan for winter driving conditions.
a yellow snowfall warning is also in place for the sea to sky highway from squamish through whistler, forecasting heavy snow of 15 to 25 cm by tuesday afternoon.
drivers across the region should watch for water pooling on roads in low-lying areas and plan for weather-related travel delays.
the longer-range forecast calls for continued rain all week in metro vancouver and the possibility of snow at elevation.
monday’s rainfall warning came hours after environment canada lifted a warning about possible flooding and high tides on b.c.’s south coast on the weekend.
