one man is in custody and a canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of another following the stabbing death on saturday of 25-year-old omar jonathan grant of ottawa.
police were called to st. laurent place, a seven-storey, 112-unit ottawa community housing apartment building at 500 st. laurent blvd., north of montreal road, at around 9:25 p.m. on feb. 15 for a “disturbance.”
ottawa paramedics were also called to the scene and transported two men to hospital. grant, who suffered “penetrative trauma,” was pronounced dead at hospital.
the second victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital in stable condition with a head injury, according to paramedics.

jacob blanchard, 25, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon. he appeared in court monday morning and was remanded into custody.

a fourth-floor resident said on monday that many of the building’s tenants were angered and traumatized by the incident, and planned to hold a meeting with ottawa community housing officials on tuesday.
meanwhile, a gofundme campaign has been organized by grant’s aunt, paula johnson, to raise $10,000 for funeral and related expenses. “i need help for his funeral and celebration of life for my sister to have a proper burial and celebration of life of her baby boy who will be missed from so many,” she wrote.
