newcomers received a warm welcome and plenty of information on what the windsor community has to offer during the second annual bienvenue chez nous, bienvenue chez vous! francophone community day.
the event, which aims to promote the contribution of newcomers to the community and french-language education, was held saturday on the grounds of college boreal.
“the purpose of it is to welcome newcomers, family like newcomers, francophone basically, mainly to the city and tell them that they are not alone to settle down here,” said yasmine joheir, executive director of le centre communautaire francophone windsor-essex-kent, which hosted the event.

“we’re here to help them. that’s why you’re going to see more than 22 providers that provide services for newcomers.
“to show them that we have services in education, mental health, employee, employment, settlement and we’re here to help them to integrate into the canadian society.”
there was lively music, dancing, cultural and artistic activities, a free barbecue and sports and games for kids and adults alike, in a festive atmosphere.
ahmed said 500 people visited last year’s event and she was expecting the same this year.
many of the newcomers speak french as a second language.
