a motorist faces a charge of careless driving — and a fine for littering — after tossing a cigarette out a passenger-side window and crashing through the guardrail of highway 417’s median.
officers from the ottawa detachment of the ontario provincial police responded to the scene on highway 417, between eagleson road and moodie drive, just after 9 a.m.
the opp said the eastbound driver crashed into the median after losing control of the vehicle while trying to flick a cigarette out the passenger-side window. the car, a four-door white sedan, smashed against the westbound lanes’ guardrail.
the driver was taken to hospital by the ottawa paramedic service with minor injuries.
littering carries a $110 fine, while careless driving carries a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.
according to health canada, tobacco kills about 48,000 people a year in this country, more than all of the deaths caused by alcohol, opioids, murder and traffic collisions combined.
