kingston — meadowbrook-strathcona dist. coun. jeff mclaren received an official reprimand from council for comments that violated council’s code of conduct.
mclaren was found by the city’s integrity commissioner to have violated the code in a media interview late last year when he questioned the motives behind his fellow councillors voting against funding for the limestone city co-operative housing proposal, a project mclaren spearheaded.
“the comments reported in the article speculated on the motives of other members of council in voting against the funding proposal that was in some way an attempt to thwart the councillor’s ambitions,” the city’s integrity commissioner meghan a. cowan of aird & berlis llp told council tuesday night.
“likewise, we find that such comments cast aspersions on the intent of council in passing the motion as it did, which is a contravention of the code. the statements made by the councillor as reported in the article were a speculative accusation.”
mclaren said he though he had made it clear to the journalist that his comments were off the record.
mclaren did not speak to the reprimand in council on tuesday.
in november, mclaren was found to have violated the code of conduct when he revealed details of a closed-door meeting.
