b.c.’s civilian police watchdog is looking for witnesses after a man was injured from falling off his scooter after an interaction with police near a surrey skytrain station.
the incident occurred on oct. 12 near the intersection of 104th avenue and 133 a street in a busy area of whalley near a transit hub.
“around 5:30 p.m., metro vancouver transit police officers attempted to stop a man riding a scooter near the surrey central transit station,” said the independent investigations office in a news release. “the man rode away and was later found again by another officer near the intersection of 104th avenue and 133 a street.”
he had been injured while falling from his scooter and was taken to hospital. he has since been released.
the man’s injuries meet the threshold of serious harm, said the iio, which investigates police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
the police act defines serious harm as an injury that may result in death, cause serious disfigurement or cause a “substantial loss or impairment of mobility.”
the iio said it’s still investigating whether police action played a role in the fall.
investigators are asking for witnesses or video of the incident near 104th avenue and 133 a street, specifically the driver or passengers in a dark-coloured sedan seen driving through the intersection immediately after the incident.
