grass doesn't pass: guards find 'cleverly disguised' contraband meant for b.c. prison

an attempt to smuggle contraband into a b.c. prison was cut short after a package, “cleverly disguised” as grass, was discovered by correctional officers.
rcmp said guards doing their morning rounds at mission institution on the morning of april 9 found the package on the prison grounds.
the package was dropped overnight over the fence of the medium-security prison, possibly by a drone, said mission rcmp.
“the package was cleverly disguised by attaching real cut grass around the entire exterior of a bubble-mailer, helping it to seamlessly blend in with the grass inside the fence line of the institution,” it said. “however, the contents of the package were far from anything related to lawn maintenance.”
inside the package was more than 300 grams of suspected methamphetamine, pills, bottles of suspected steroids, an iphone and razor blades.
a camouflaged package containing drugs, a cellphone, steroids and other pills was smuggled onto the grounds of the mission institution on april 8 or 9, 2026, said rcmp.

drone drops are a continuing problem for canadian prisons. according to correctional service canada, there were 839 drone incidents at their facilities in 2025-26.
mission rcmp said it’s investigating the incident, and will recommend charges if it finds sufficient evidence against suspects, both inside or outside of the prison.
