every day, nine new canadians are diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a little-known and incurable blood cancer, but erma roung is hoping to change that.
the multiple myeloma march windsor-essex county sunday was held virtually this year due to the covid-19 pandemic.
roung, who lost her husband ken roung in 2010 only two months after doctors finally diagnosed him with the disease, has organized the annual event for 11 years.
this year, participants were encouraged to hold their own five-kilometre walk/run in their neighbourhood, raising money that will mainly be used for research on the rare cancer.
multiple myeloma affects immune cells and is found in the bone marrow. common symptoms of the very painful illness are fractures and kidney failure.
roung said it will be about a week before she knows how much money was raised but this year’s goal is $30,000.
